Dale and Jim provided their pre-match stories. Dale also provided the shooters database I needed to contact the winners. I was able to send out emails to all of the division and category winners with all of the questions I would have asked.
Over the next week and half I assembled and grouped together interviews and shooters’ quotes to put them in a narrative story that could be published in Front Sight.
Thanks to all of the shooters that did provide feedback and in the timely manner it was provided. We were also up against a critical deadline if we wanted the article to make it in the next Front Sight publication, so the prompt responses were greatly appreciated!
Thank you also to Dale’s wife and Dale for proof reading and improving on grammatical composition.
Thanks to Rich Dettelhouser for coming through with match photos!
And, last, but not least, thanks to Robin Taylor of USPSA for his editing comments.
With all of the efforts, I believe we released an informative and interesting article on the
2010 Area 5 Championships.

When Dale Hayen and Jim Thompson asked me to write their Area 5 Championship’s Front Sight article, I was hesitant and reluctant, to say the least. I welcomed the opportunity, but I wanted to be sure I was the right person to represent their match in a manner that they would be proud.
Typically, the author of a match knows they’re going to be the author in advance of the match, so they have the opportunity to take photos and interview shooters during the match. Knowing in advance also affords the author to pay closer attention to shooter banter and to take notes of immediate shooter feedback.
